What seemed like a quick throwaway line about President Donald Trump got a big reaction when Stephen Colbert delivered it to his “Late Show” audience on Monday night.
Colbert was speaking about the chaos in the White House press office, and Trump toying aloud with the idea of ditching daily briefings and doing his own press conferences every couple of weeks.
“Oh sir! Please don’t do your own press conferences,” Colbert sarcastically begged. “They’re always such fountains of eloquence and bastions of dignity. What would we make jokes about the next day?”
But it was a line delivered a little later in the monologue that caused Colbert’s studio audience to erupt in laughter.
He wondered aloud if Trump was watching ― and he could well be, given the president’s criticism of Colbert this month. Then the host delivered a message directly to the president.
