It’s no secret that Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) isn’t a huge fan Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Warren vocally opposed Sessions’ nomination and has continued to speak out against him.
But the Democratic lawmaker took her criticism one step further on Monday, saying that Sessions “needs to be fired” if allegations that that Sessions lied under oath during his confirmation hearings are true.
“He needs to be fired. He needs to be taken out of that job,” she told former Barack Obama adviser David Axelrod on his podcast. “If you’re not going to be honest during your confirmation hearing, then you ought to be gone.”
The AG is accused of lying to the Senate about having conversations with the Russian ambassador last year. In March, he recused himself from the FBI’s investigation of the ties between President Donald Trump’s staffer and the Kremlin but denied he had any improper contact with Russia.
The FBI launched its probe after it and the CIA last year concluded that Russia attempted to interfere in the U.S. presidential election to help get Trump elected. Former FBI director James Comey, who Trump fired last month over the probe, testified in front of the Senate last week. Sessions is set to appear before the Senate on Tuesday in a public hearing, where he’s expected to be grilled on Russia.
