It’s over for two-time Olympic medalist Michelle Kwan and husband Clay Pell.
According to legal docs obtained by TMZ, Pell ― an attorney and former White House staffer under the Obama administration ― filed divorce docs, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split. Though he didn’t request spousal support, he did ask that the skating champion foot his lawyer bills.
The pair, who have no children together, married in 2013 after meeting two years earlier. Pell confirmed news of the split to the Providence Journal on Wednesday.
“It is with deep regret that I share that Michelle’s and my marriage is coming to an end,” Pell said in the statement. “This is a sad and difficult turn of events for our family. I love Michelle, and wish her the very best as her life takes her in a new direction.”
Back in 2014, Kwan campaigned for Pell during his unsuccessful run for Rhode Island governor, evening starring in a TV spot in the lead-up to the election.
“Clay knows Rhode Island can be ready for tomorrow by making it one of the best places for women to live and work,” she said in the ad. “Clay believes what I believe — we need equality for all women.”
Kwan’s life has taken a political turn since her retirement from professional ice skating about 10 years ago. Post-skating, Kwan earned her Master’s degree at Tufts’ Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in 2011. A year later, Kwan joined the State Department under then-Secretary Hillary Clinton, who went on to hire the skater as her surrogate outreach coordinator during the 2016 presidential election.
